our history
Mi casa es su casa
Once upon a time around March of 1986, World War II and Korean war veteran James Howell bought the Donn's BBQ located at 10003 FM 969 in Travis County from former U.S. Marine Donn Subocz and Donn's wife Myra. Thus, the name of the hole-in-the wall BBQ joint. Several years later James Howell joined up with Jose Guerrero to expand the business to include Breakfast all day; Burgers and BBQ and to open 7 days a week (excluding Thanksgiving & Christmas). Mr. Howell passed away on March 17, 2019, at the age of 96, but he left a legacy of always reassuring that Donn's BBQ customers will always be treated like family by serving only the best quality food in Central Texas. Jose, wife Denise and daughter Maria operate all 3 locations.

James Howell
Jim, as he is fondly known, served in World War II and the Korean War. One of his flight Instructors was actually John Glenn! Mr. Howell started in the restaurant business back in Corpus Christi. He came to Austin in the mid-'80s and opened the Donn's BBQ located at FM 969. Jim opened a 2nd location in Oak Hill in 1994 with a 3rd location opening in 2013 along south I-35. He was 96 years old in this photo! He is our business associate and beloved friend who helped Jose learn the BBQ business.
